Every year there are lots of questions about AAU and travel basketball.  Below, I have answered the most frequently asked questions—I hope this helps you.  If you still have questions, please e-mail or call me.

WHAT IS THE VARSITY ATHLETIC CLUB & AAU/TRAVEL BASKETBALL?

The Varsity A.C. travel basketball teams were started by Brian Krzynowek, and began to participate in tournaments in 1988.  Since 1988 thousands of boys and girls have played on our teams and many went on to play in college and the pros!  We are well known for our development of the fundamental skills of the game, and our coaches work hard on the individual development of the players.  We place great emphasis on the player’s improvement of their basketball skills — “we don’t just work on plays-we work on our player’s skills!”  We feel that the reason most families choose to play spring travel basketball is for their child to improve, that is why individual player’s skill development will always be our #1 priority—not just wins/losses!   The remark we hear the most from parents when their son/daughter comes to play for us from another travel team-is how much more skill improvement their son/daughter got from playing with a VAC travel team over the spring compared to their prior AAU team! We started the Salem area program only 4 yrs. ago and continue to show growth every year because of the hard work of our director, Rob Hovorka, the coaches and our team’s players! Thank yu for all your support!

Last year we had almost 100 boys and girls playing for our Salem area program!

WHAT IS AAU/TRAVEL BASKETBALL?

Our travel basketball program is for boys and girls (4-12th grades).  AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) is just one of many organizations that host spring basketball tournaments for these types of travel teams.  There are many other nationwide organizations that sponsor these kinds of tournaments also, but since AAU was basically the first to do this, many people just refer to spring basketball as AAU basketball.  The travel basketball season basically is March (mainly practices) with games in April & May. Teams will practice once per week (at the Salem Community Center and Centerplex) and play multiple (3-6) games, on weekends, within approximately 1 hour from the Salem area!  You can look on the spring tournaments page on this website to see what our playing schedule may look like!

EACH PLAYER SHOULD PLAY IN 30-50 GAMES DURING THESE 2 MONTHS

(basically getting an extra school season or two of organized basketball)

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO PLAY ON OUR AAU/TRAVEL TEAM?

Our fees are THE LOWEST in NE OHIO spring AAU basketball at only $275 per person!  You’ll also need to purchase a uniform for $75.  We try to keep the same style uniforms from year to year so this should be a one-time only expense for you (not an annual expense)!  We also give you a lot more tournament play (improve your skills and decision making at GAME SPEED) than any other AAU organization as your son/daughter will play in 10 events to give them the best chance at maximum playing time in game situations.

Please compare this to other organizations that charge $400-$800 for much less playing and practice time!

(if you play for another AAU team that only plays in 6-7 tournaments this spring it would mean that your son/daughter

missed out on 15-20 games—which is almost like sitting out a whole season of school basketball

AND PAID MORE MONEY TO MISS OUT ON THESE EXTRA GAMES & PRACTICES!)

HOW MUCH WILL YOU PLAY IN THE GAMES?

There are no guarantees on playing time.  The harder you work, the better you’ll get, the more you will play.  Every player is guaranteed to play in every game, however the amount of playing time is by the coaches discretion. Also, please understand that because you are often playing multiple games in the same day the whole team needs to play to be able to make it thru the tournaments!
